A BETTER WORLD

STARTS WITH A BETTER ME

2016 CEO LETTER

What if we can change the world? I can’t even recall how many times I have asked myself this question already. And how many ideas I have had, of which most turned out to be impractical. But this most recent idea might be different..

My team, friends and family know that I’m a man of action. I like to experiment with ideas as soon as they appear. Even though I don’t know the how, knowing the goal is enough to start. My Kenyan sister Pamela always says:

“He doesn’t know what he is doing until he has done it.”

And that pretty much hits the nail.

Cheap Impact and the Sustainable Dome Home have been such ideas. And now it’s the Better Me Foundation. This new concept perfectly merges what we have been doing already and what we want to do in future create a lasting impact in this world. When I first thought about it I literally had problems to sleep that night. I was thinking and imagining the endless possibilities. Today I can only tell you that the idea, young as it is, has evolved to become my new center of life.

The first thing I did after focusing my thoughts was to ask my team in Kenya for feedback. Simon and Eduardo have become part of my extended family and I value their opinions highly. Getting back to me with nothing but enthusiasm fired me up to continue pursuing this idea.

“We are innovative optimists sharing good ideas, knowledge and tools to create a better world.”

The idea seems simple: A Better World starts with a Better Me.

I recently came across the Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev who believed that people change the world around them with the personal choices they make. Individual human action reverberates outward and touches people in ways we can’t expect nor perceive.

Bread for myself is a material question,” he wrote. “Bread for my neighbor is a spiritual question.”

You might also have heard about the “Butterfly Effect”. Maybe even watched the movie named after it.

The Butterfly Effect grants the power to cause a hurricane in China to a butterfly flapping its wings in New Mexico. It may take a very long time, but the connection is real. If the butterfly had not flapped its wings at just the right point in space/time, the hurricane would not have happened.

This counts for every action we take and every thought we think. Every single being in this world effects one another in ways we can’t even imagine. Knowing this makes it clear, to create a better future for all of us, we have to start with the individual. With ourselves.

Over the last years I’ve been a big investor in my own self-development. But I wasn’t always like that. I only started to value my own self-development after I left my comfort zone in Germany behind to travel the African continent in 2012. This choice truly has been the best decision of my life, and I have never looked back. Experiencing the world and meeting incredible people has made me grow tremendously. Seeing for myself the reality of life alternative to my own, different from my upbringing, value systems, and intentions, has lead me on a path to consciously question what motivates us and our decisions. Once I realized how incredible “the other side” was, I tried to understand what made me take this path. What unleashed my mind to think and live consciously.

“What made me spark and how can I trigger this spark in others.”

Having met hundreds of individuals across the world who have reached the same understanding as me made me curious to find the overlapping commonality in our stories. What I found was that we had all traveled but also experienced some kind of mentorship that opened our eyes. People they had met or stories they had read altered their beliefs.
I like to describe it as a small version of the Overview Effect. It’s what Astronauts experience when seeing the earth from space. A new perspective, triggers a deep understanding of life and our world. I can only imagine the feeling when seeing this beautiful blue planet as a whole. No doubt it changes you. And so do powerful experiences.

Planet Earth just traveled 5000 miles in the last 5 minutes with you, me and 7 billion other humans on it. We are all sitting in the same boat. We breath the same air and drink the same water. But it’s hard to grasp, the magnitude is difficult to comprehend.

Going back to the Butterfly Effect, we have 7 billion people who are affecting each others’ lives at every moment in time. Imagine the world we could create if we affected each other positively and productively.

But as most of us are busy with our own problems, there isn’t much time to think for the world. Before we can help others, we’ve to take care of ourselves.

“I simply can’t fill anyones bucket if my own bucket is empty.”

Think of the safety instructions in an airplane before take off. In case of emergency, put your oxygen mask on first, before you help others. Because if you pass out first, you can’t help anyone at all.

The Good Life, being happy and fulfilled, is a sweet spot between selfishness and selflessness.

Better Me will give you a roadmap to get there. And it starts in your mind.

As Tony Robbins book titles: Unleash the power within. We provide you with the experience, knowledge and tools to unlock your potential.

Happy and fulfilled people create a better world by default.

Thus, a Better World starts with a Better Me.
